Maine is defined by its forests. They are our identity, our economy, and our legacy. But as of March 2026, the data has shifted. With unseasonable thaws and high-danger days becoming our new baseline, the mandate for Maine’s resource managers is clear: We must prevent our forests from becoming a cautionary tale.

For land trusts, foresters, and municipal managers, the challenge is no longer just "land clearing"—it is the strategic management of a shifting environment.

Beyond the Vendor: Your Infrastructure Partner
At Cross Country Land Services, we don’t view ourselves as a line-item vendor. We are a dedicated infrastructure partner for the state’s forest leaders. We understand that wildfire mitigation is a high-stakes component of compliant site execution and long-term environmental stewardship. We provide the functional solution to the "ladder fuel" problem through precision forestry mulching—the strategic choice for site-specific resilience.

Why Mulching is the Strategic Choice for 2026
While Maine’s biomass and timber harvesting industries are vital for high-volume fiber markets, there are critical areas where on-site mulching is the superior tool for the job.

  • Compliant with New MFS BMPs: Our process is specifically designed to align with the February 2026 Maine Forest Service “Extreme Weather” BMPs. By keeping organic material on-site, we stabilize the soil and protect water quality in ways that traditional clearing cannot.

  • Moisture Retention vs. Extraction: Some manage by extraction; we manage by stabilization. Mulching converts "flashy" vertical fuels into a high-density ground cover. This layer acts as a moisture-rich "sponge," increasing the forest floor's hydration and its natural resistance to ignition.

  • Precision in the Interface: In the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and on sensitive land trust parcels, the footprint of heavy-hauling equipment is often a liability. Mulching allows for surgical thinning that protects the overstory while hardening the perimeter.

Prime Contractor Scalability: Ready for the 2026 Season
Capacity is the bridge between a plan and a protected landscape. To meet the urgency of the upcoming season, Cross Country Land Services now deploys 10 fully equipped, DEP and OSHA-certified mulching crews across the state. As a prime contractor, we provide the execution security that state and federal managers require. While we have 10 crews in the field today, we maintain the internal infrastructure to double that capability to 20 crews should the need and funding arise. We are the “shovel-ready” partner that land managers need to successfully secure and execute USDA, FEMA, and MFS mitigation grants.

Leading the Way in Stewardship
We aren’t just reacting to potential fire and its abatement—we are leading the way in stewardship. Wildfire readiness is no longer a “Western problem”— it is a Maine priority. By choosing a partner who understands the balance between site execution and ecological health, we can ensure that Maine’s forests remain a legacy of safety, beauty, and economic strength for the next generation.
